PORTRAIT OF A CITY: THE NEW LONDON PROJECT invites the public to engage in an exhibition experience that celebrates and encourages the strength and uniqueness of the diverse community of New London and indeed all communities.

A professional photographer for 30 years, Joe Standart is acclaimed for capturing the ever-changing subtleties of light and mood.  His award-winning career includes individual and group shows across the country and his work is included in many private collections and museums.  Recently, his work has been exhibited at New York’s Beadleston Gallery, The Williams College Art Center, The Cooley Gallery, and Duggal.  His commercial work includes work for Architectural Digest, House & Garden, General Electric, Viking Range Corporation, and The Cindy Crawford Collection.  Standart has published two books, The Scented Room and Passion for Detail, and he has contributed to many others.

In PORTRAIT OF A CITY: THE NEW LONDON PROJECT Joe Standard uses light to explore mood, texture, spirit and character. The subjects glow forth from a deep textured background. These portraits have, at once, bold contrast and delicate use of light that recall Rembrandt in their stark warmth. The project is far more than the portraits themselves, however, and in essence this is a work of process and performance and one that will continue to grow through the dynamics of community and viewer interaction.

PORTRAIT OF A CITY: THE NEW LONDON PROJECT exhibition will open with receptions at Lyman Allyn Art Museum, 625 Williams Street at 5:30 -7:00pm, Alva Gallery, 54 State Street,6:00-8:00pm, Golden Street Gallery, 6:00-9:00pm and the Hygienic Art Galleries 79 Bank Street, 7:00-10:00pm.
