Art Exhibition
Opening Reception Saturday, May 20, 6-9:00 pm
Hygienic Art Galleries, 79 Bank Street, New London
May 20 – June 17, 2006
One woman is from Costa Rica, another is from New London, one woman has
never picked up a brush, another has been painting for years, one woman
is in her teens, another is in her seventies. After seven weeks of empowering
art classes with Women’s Voices, a local non-profit arts program under
Hygienic Arts, Inc., each of these women will come together with 75 other
Women’s Voices participants and 13 others, who are taking arts classes
with Kente Cultural Center’s Mother Daughter Workshops, to display
their artwork in Women’s Voices VI: Reach Out, an art exhibition held
at Hygienic Art Galleries, 79 Bank Street, New London from May 20 through
June 17.
Join these women, their families and friends on Saturday, May 20 from 6
to 9 pm for the opening reception to celebrate their artwork at Hygienic
Art Galleries. Creations include: beaded bezels, clay sculpture, drawing,
embellished hurricane lamps and plates, fabric cards, fabric painting, fabric
sculpture, pottery, printmaking, sumi brush painting, and quilting.
Now in its sixth year, Women’s Voices continues to connect women,
diverse in age, ethnicity and culture through artistic expression. With
affordable arts programming and exhibition opportunities for all women,
Women’s Voices aims to empower women by developing their artistic
skills, encourage new relationships within the female community and present
a forum where they can express their individual voice.
Each year Women’s Voices has offered an increasing number and variety
of art workshops with talented instructors who share their experience and
nurture each woman’s creative exploration. The casual workshop environment
brings out great conversation and sharing where many friendships have been
forged. After each session of classes Women’s Voices helps women realize
the value of their creative talents by offering a one month exhibition at
Hygienic Art Galleries to show and sell their new works.
Women’s Voices is supported by Hygienic Art, Inc, Kente Cultural
Center, Garde Arts Center, The Bodenwein Public Benevolent Foundation, The
Puffin Foundation Ltd.
