“A SENSE OF NATURE’

On March 18, 2006 in New London, CT, the Hygienic Art Galleries will hold an opening reception from 7:00 pm to 10:00 pm for “A Sense Of Nature”. The exhibit features the art of Gail Ferris, Sky Hoyt and Michael McLaughlin. The show will run through April 15, 2006 closing at 6:00 pm. Gallery hours are Thurs. 11-3, Fri. & Sat. 11-6, Sun. 12-3.

Gail Ferris is a painter whose inspiration for her abstract expressionism derives from early exposure to Alexander Calder’s mobiles and her endless fascination with how objects move through air and water. Birds flying or the interaction of her kayak with waves and currents. Exploring brush and ink and watercolor, Gail states, “as a direct vector of my subconscious on paper happening as instantaneously as a wave on the water passes by”. Gail has made solo arctic expeditions as a kayak paddler in Greenland, Baffin Island Nunavut, Kodiak and Barrow Alaska. Gail lived in Greenland for three years for the purpose of seeing the light transition via the seasons. She is a member of The Arctic Institute Of North America and The Explorers Club Of New York.

Sky Hoyt paints gardens. Sky says, “collector’s objects, textiles, bric-a-brac, handicrafts, historical works of art and decaying cars mingle with ripe fruits, fragrant flowers, animals and various plants in places that I call gardens. The garden is the world where the natural, handmade and psychological can exist together, weaving stories, engaging in lifelike activities and rituals, or just hanging around, relating to one another”.

Michael McLaughlin is an award winning bronze sculptor and is a professor of sculpture and figurative anatomy at WAA. He attended Lyme Academy and apprenticed as a wood carver with sculptor, Juan Andreu at R&F Designs in Bristol, CT. His sculpture of animals, birds, and figures morphing into trees are mysterious and mezmerizing.
