GREGORY BOWERMAN

Leda and the Swan

Gregory Bowerman is just completing his second year as a resident artist at the Hygienic Co-operative. As a full time oil painter, the Hygienic has allowed Greg the opportunity to explore his painting as well as become involved in the local community. Greg is currently the coordinating artist for the New London Main Street Mural project, in conjunction with the Drop In Learn Center, an after school program for 7 to 13 year olds. They are executing murals in downtown New London. Greg is also the coordinator for New London's 3rd Annual Open Studio Tour, featuring the talents of over 60 artists and musicians that work, live, and/or support the arts in Downtown New London. In addition he operates the Golden Street Gallery, a local gallery that promotes local and emerging artists. Greg is also a participating artist in the Urban Artist Initiative (UAI) a state wide program sponsored by the Connecticut Commission on the Arts and the Department of Community Research.

Greg's paintings vary from realistic to abstract, focusing on utilizing color and form as a tool for developing concept and visual response. Greg enjoys painting visual responses based on literature, spirituality and self-reflection. His work has been

included in juried exhibitions in Payersbach, Austria (hosted by Spiritual Artist Ernst Fuchs) and Dublin, Ireland. He has tackled subjects such as "The Celebration of Life" (displayed at the UCONN Health Center for 90 days) this double sided triptych stands

seven feet tall and is eight feet wide when open. He has also made a series as a visual response to "The Epic of Gilgimesh" and his most recent body of work "Seduced by the Gods". Greg insists that his work is not illustrations or interpretations of the literature he refers to, however it is an individual visual response, depicting "How the stories made me feel as I read them."

Greg's work may me viewed at the "BRICK GALLERY", 10 Main Street, Essex, CT, New work every four weeks with a reception every third Thursday of the Month. His work may also be viewed in his work-in/live-in studio at 79 Bank Street, or in his portfolio at the Golden Street Gallery, 94 Golden Street, New London, CT. commissions accepted.
